Driving laws and culture on Puerto Rico
Driving is on the right-hand side as in the U.S., and all driving rules are the same as in the United States. All of the signs are in Spanish, however, and distance is measured in kilometers and gasoline measured in litres. Be aware of frequent stopping. Speed limit is 55mph (lower in cities and residential areas) and is strictly enforced. The leftmost lane is reserved as the bus lane. Red traffic lights can be ignored between the hours of midnight to 6:00am, but drivers must come to a complete stop before proceeding. Overall, drivers may not be as reserved in Puerto Rico as they are in other countries.

Parking can be limited in some cities on the Island, and you will generally have to pay in order to find a place.

Age limit to drive on Puerto Rico
Each car rental company decides how old the driver of the vehicle must be. For information, visit the Rental Terms page.

Seatbelt, safety seat, and helmet policy on Puerto Rico
All drivers and passengers must wear their seatbelts, and all motorcyclists must wear helmets. These laws are strictly enforced. Children under four-years-old should be in a child safety seat. Older children should ride in the back seat.

Road contitions on Puerto Rico
Driving in cities during certain times of the day can be difficult, and there may be a lot of traffic jams. Roads on the Island are maintained well, and they are well-marked. Most main streets are well-lit at dark. However, make sure that your car doors are locked if you are driving or not because car theft is common on the Island.
